This trip takes you across the heart of the Sahara. You will drive past long sand dunes, rocky mountains and dry riverbeds, stop in busy towns and walk the market in Atar. You will spend a whole day in Chinguetti, an old stone town with a very old mosque, green palm oases and ancient book collections. You will also visit Ouadane, a tiny, far-away oasis on a rocky hill, and see the strange round shape of the Guelb Richat — the “eye of the Sahara.” Along the way you will rest in simple, air-conditioned hotels and enjoy small desert oases like Terjit.
The journey also has big moments of adventure. You will ride the long iron train from Zouerate to Nouadhibou — a rough but unforgettable trip on top of wagons. In Nouadhibou you can relax, then go to Banc d’Arguin to sail with local fishermen and watch huge numbers of birds like pelicans and flamingos. The trip ends back in Nouakchott where you will see the busy fish market before your flight home.
