Mauritania has two major natural reserves: the Diawling National Park and the National Park of Banc d’Arguin.
In the extreme south-western Mauritania, is located the Diawling National Park along the Senegal River, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It covers an area of 16,000 hectares. This reserve is the nearby National Park Sanctuary, located in Senegal, it is a set of high ecological value in terms of biodiversity. It was classified Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. It is a tourist attraction for those interested in bird watching and other animals such as warthogs. The creation of a Transborder Biosphere Reserve of the Senegal River Delta including in the same set the Djoudj Bird Park and the National park of Diawling may indeed be a powerful tourist attraction.
The National Park of Banc of Arguin is located 165 km north of Nouakchott. It covers a vast rectangle straddling the Atlantic Ocean, 75 km wide and 150 km long. Its north side is in the same level of the Cap Blanc south of Nouadhibou. This park is an attracting place, because of the presence of thousands of migratory birds. It is a true treasure for bird watchers and other enthusiasts who may also experience the culture and customs of the people Imraguen fishing in their ancestors’ ways.
